Headmasters

Being of the Scotch-Presbyterian faith, as were many of the early settlers, James Harris and James Dunlap (the founders of Bellefonte), believed that the proposed Bellefonte Academy should have a strong "kirk" (church) influence.  Therefore the lot set aside for the Academy was initially adjacent to those for the churches.  Shortly afterwards, the location was changed to the present site at the corner of Bishop and Spring Streets.  This site provided a picturesque setting on a high limestone ridge with land sweeping away on every side.
