Sports Highlights 1900s

1902-1903 School Year

BASKETBALL

During the winter of 1903, the Academy's entire basketball schedule was a three game series with the Bellefonte Athletic Club, a group of sports minded youth from town.  The majority of the members had already graduated from high school or college and possessed enough enthusiasm for sport that they desired an outlet.  This would be just the second year of basketball at Bellefonte Academy.  All the games this year, and for many years to come, were played in the Armory at Spring & Lamb Streets.

The first game was played Saturday, February 28th. "before a large and enthusiastic crowd."  Although the Academy boys built a decided advantage in the first half, the Athletic Club rallied in the second half, overcame the deficit and won the game 16 to 9.

Game two was played Thursday, March 19th.  The Athletic Club  was at a disadvantage from the beginning since two of their better players, Ed Keichline and Frank Newbaker,  were hobbled by injuries.  The game was "hotly contested from start to finish" and the supporters of both clubs "made Rome howl with their yells."  In the end, the Academy won 19 to 11

The third and deciding game was finally played Wednesday, April 8th.  "The play was fine on both sides and every player exerted all his strength and skill in order to win.  The Academy boys won the game 20 to 17 and with it the bragging rights to Bellefonte for the year.
