  Academy Sports

Throughout it's existence the Bellefonte Academy built a strong regional reputation as one of the state's finest educational institutions.  In 1909, the Philadelphia North American reported that "The Bellefonte Academy has educated more governors, more senators, more judges, and more public men ... than any other school in Pennsylvania."  The addition of James Potter Hughes as Headmaster did more than improve the schools educational stature.  Mr Hughes introduced athletics to the Academy, as he held strong beliefs in the healthful benefits physical activity, especially outdoor activity.  He greatest contribution, however, was instilling these beliefs in his son, James Robert Hughes, who succeeded him as Headmaster.

James was a sports enthusiast beyond compare.  It was his personal drive and competitive spirit that pushed him to not only introduce organized sports to the students of the Academy, but to bring some of the greatest athletes of Pennsylvania and surrounding states to the Academy and in the process build an athletic program that was unequalled.

From the start, the Academy built a regional reputation for fielding strong teams, most often scheduling games with schools that were not only larger in enrollment, but teams that should have easily outclassed the Academy.

Although only a high school level school, preparing students to attend college, their opponents regularly included much larger high schools, small colleges, university freshmen and even semi-professional teams. (review the partial list on the Links page)
