"We understand from some of the pupils that Mr. Woods, the principal of the Academy in this place, is about instituting a gymnasium in connection with that institution. This is intended to give the scholars healthful exercise, - and, if they will be careful not to abuse the privileges which it will give them, it may prove a great benefit to them. As a general thing too little  and outdoor exercise of our school children by parents and teachers and this effort of Mr. Woods to give them recreation which will be both healthful and beneficial, deserves encouragement at the hand of the public."

Professor Woods

"This gentleman who, for some time, has been the Principal of the Academy at this place, closed the school on Monday last, for the summer vacation. Our community has been so * well pleased with the scholarly abilities of Mr. Woods, that he has been urgently requested to remain, and teach the ensuing session. We believe Mr. W. has consented to this arrangement, and will reopen the Academy on or about the 16th of September next. Mr. Woods not only pays attention to the minds of his pupils, but appears anxious also to improve their physical development. For the purpose he has erected or constructed a gymnasium, which appears to take very well with the scholars, and we have no doubt will be of much benefit to them, if carried on judiciously. As a scholar Professor Woods ranks high, and that his best abilities have been used for the advancement of his pupils, is evidenced by the anxiety manifested by our citizens for his retention among them as a teacher."
