"Some of the Academy boys have propounded to us the following conundrums, and gives the answers.
1 - why is our school like a cupboard? Because it has a Boal and it. 2 - why is our school like a menagerie? Because it has Lyons and it. 3 - why is our school like a duck pond? Because it has a Drake and it. 4 - why is our school like a rainbow? Because it has Huges in it.

"Rev. J. P. Hughes, principle of the Bellefonte Academy, has a new advertisement in to-day's paper. Mr. Hughes is making every effort to bring this institution up to a high standard, and already has a school that will compare most favorably with any other institution of the kind anywhere. Competent and faithful teachers are employed, and we are glad to learn that the school is numerously attended and liberally supported.
We trust our citizens will make a point in the future to sustain an academic school in our midst. It should be a matter of pride, as it is a matter of convenience, and we would like to see our town as much celebrated for her schools as she is for beautiful and romantic scenery. It is the intention of Mr. Hughes to give a four-year course at the Academy, so that those who do not wish, were not able to attend college, make perfect their studies here at less expense. This is what has long been needed in Bellefonte, and we hope our citizens, instead of sending their sons and daughters abroad, will thereafter educate them at home."

"The Bellefonte Academy has been renovated and refitted in good style for the fall and winter session, which begins in September. Mr. Hughes, the accomplished and indefatigable principal, is sparing no pains to make this institution first-class, and we are pleased to know, is succeeding beyond his most sanguine expectations. The supports it is accorded him is the best proof that his abilities are appreciated by our people, and we have confidence that ere long we will see the Bellefonte Academy quoted as one of the best classical schools in the country. Read the advertisements in another column."

BELLEFONTE ACADEMY
"The scholastic year of this institution closed on the 25th inst. On the evening of Thursday and Friday public exhibitions were given in the court house at which we were pleased to see there was a general turnout at our citizens - into the room was filled to repletion.
On Thursday evening the audience was entertained with declamations by the young gentleman and vocal instrumental music by the young ladies, all, without exception, acquitted themselves well, and we cannot let the opportunity pass without calling attention to the efforts of masters Gepheart and Boal, who evidenced a surprising talent in declamation, nor the exactitude with which the young ladies and Misses onto the careful training of Mrs. Hughes did their vocal exercises and calisthenics.
Friday evening was devoted principally to music both vocal and upon the piano - accidents had was performed affording much pleasure to those present - everything going off without jar or confusion. All did well - but the performance of Master James McCafferty, calls for a special notice. In his singing there was a naturalness not often witnessed at school exhibitions as well as a knowledge displayed of what was expected of him scarcely ever attained.
The years since, Mr. Hughes took charge of this school. Then was a very small affair, without vitality - without aim. He, by his energy, and with the assistance of several gentlemen, at once went to work to bring order out of chaos and to infuse life into the institution. In the exhibition we have the result. One year ago there were about twenty scholars - at the close of the year there were near fifty, and already there are applications for the next session, another to swell the number to near one hundred. The grounds and buildings have been proved and unified, as well as enlarged, and altogether too much praise cannot be given this worthy gentleman and his estimable lady."
